description Matagorda Bay Nature Park is a 1,600-acre park and preserve at the mouth of the Colorado River on the Matagorda Peninsula. The park has about two miles of Gulf of Mexico beach front and two miles of river frontage and hundreds of acres of coastal marshes and dunes. It is one of the best birding areas in the nation. LCRA acquired the property in 2001 as part of its commitment to preserve natural resources for future generations and to provide science education, recreation and nature tourism opportunities. The RV park has an office for on-site assistance, rest rooms with showers, and washers and dryers for the park guests. The natural science center consists of two joined sections, Redfish Hall and an area used primarily for natural science education programs and teacher workshops. Public access to the Colorado River is available by shoreline and three fishing piers. LCRA maintains Jetty Park, a day-use facility providing direct access to the beach and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built and maintains the Jetty Park pier. All park visitors must check in at the park office when arriving at the park. If arriving after 4:00 p.m., please contact the park office at 979-863-7120 prior to arriving.
